Which Fitted Wedding Dress Silhouette Is Right for You?
Fitted wedding dresses can create very different effects depending on where the skirt begins to flare. Understanding the distinction between mermaid, fit-and-flare and trumpet silhouettes can help you choose the shape that best reflects your bridal style, preferred movement and overall wedding-day look.
Mermaid Wedding Dresses
A mermaid wedding dress follows the body closely through the bodice, waist and hips before flaring dramatically lower on the skirt. It is ideal for brides who want a sculpted, curve-defining silhouette that emphasizes the waist and hips and creates a glamorous, dramatic finish.
Fit-and-Flare Wedding Dresses
A fit-and-flare wedding gown contours the bodice and upper skirt before opening into a softer, more gradual flare. It is a versatile choice for brides who want waist definition and a fitted shape with more ease and movement than a traditional mermaid silhouette.
Trumpet Wedding Dresses
A trumpet wedding dress is fitted through the bodice and hips, with the skirt beginning to flare higher than a traditional mermaid gown. It creates an elongated, balanced silhouette and works beautifully for brides who want a defined waist with a softer transition into the skirt.

Fitted Wedding Dresses in Lace, Satin & Embellished Finishes
The fabric and surface detail of a fitted gown can completely transform its character. Sleek satin creates clean lines and a modern, architectural effect, while floral and French-inspired laces bring softness, texture and romantic dimension to the silhouette. Beaded lace, sequins, crystals and appliqué can introduce subtle shimmer or create a more dramatic couture finish.
Bella Luna's fitted bridal collection ranges from minimalist satin designs to intricate lace and hand-embellished gowns, allowing the silhouette to remain sculpted while the fabric determines whether the finished look feels understated, romantic, glamorous or editorial.

Convertible Fitted Wedding Dresses for Two Bridal Looks
A fitted wedding dress does not have to limit you to one silhouette throughout the wedding day. Select Bella Luna designs incorporate detachable corsets, overskirts and coordinated bridal separates that transform the appearance of the gown while preserving the fitted dress underneath.
A bride may choose a fuller overskirt for the ceremony and photographs, then remove it to reveal a lighter fit-and-flare or lace gown for the reception. Convertible designs are especially appealing for brides who love the drama of a fuller ceremony gown but also want the sleek shape and movement of a fitted wedding dress later in the celebration.
Designs such as Amélie and Juliana showcase this approach through coordinated fitted gowns and removable satin elements.

Made-to-Measure Fit for Sculpted Bridal Silhouettes
Fit becomes especially important when a wedding gown is designed to follow the natural lines of the body. Rather than relying only on a standard retail dress size, Bella Luna custom bridal gowns are created using the measurements submitted for each bride.
For fitted silhouettes, both core body measurements and additional silhouette-specific measurements help determine how the gown follows the waist, hips and legs, as well as where the skirt begins to flare.
For the most accurate measurements, we recommend having them taken by an experienced local tailor and reviewing our Full Couture Process before ordering.
Fitted & Mermaid Wedding Dress FAQs
Both silhouettes follow the body through the upper gown, but the transition into the skirt differs. A mermaid gown typically remains fitted farther down the body before creating a more dramatic flare, while a fit-and-flare silhouette opens more gradually for a softer transition and additional movement.
Trumpet and mermaid gowns are both fitted bridal silhouettes. A trumpet silhouette generally begins its flare higher on the skirt, creating a gradual bell-like shape, while a mermaid silhouette stays closely fitted farther down before opening more dramatically.
Choose according to the overall bridal aesthetic you want to create. Satin emphasizes clean lines, structure and a sleek finish. Lace introduces texture, pattern and romantic detail. Brides seeking additional sparkle can also choose fitted gowns featuring beading, sequins, crystals or embellished appliqué.
Yes. Select fitted bridal gowns can be paired with detachable overskirts or coordinated separates, allowing the bride to create a fuller ceremony silhouette and reveal the fitted gown underneath for the reception. Some Bella Luna designs are created specifically as convertible multi-piece bridal ensembles.
Select Bella Luna fitted gowns may be personalized with changes to elements such as the neckline, sleeve style, coverage, train length, fabric or embellishment. Available modifications depend on the construction of the individual gown, so significant changes should be discussed before ordering.
Bella Luna custom bridal gowns are individually created using the measurements submitted for the order rather than relying solely on standard retail sizing. Accurate measurements are especially important for fitted silhouettes because the gown follows the body's proportions more closely through the bodice, waist and hips.
Custom bridal production may require up to approximately 16 weeks depending on the gown and requested modifications. We recommend ordering approximately six months before the wedding whenever possible to allow time for production, shipping and any preferred local finishing alterations.
Fitted silhouettes require additional measurements beyond standard bridal sizing because the gown is shaped closely through the waist, hips, thighs, and lower body. After your order is placed, Bella Luna Gowns will send you a fit-specific measurement form based on your selected gown and silhouette.
In addition to core body measurements, mermaid, trumpet, and fit-and-flare gowns may require measurements such as the high hip, full hip, upper thigh, mid-thigh, knee circumference, waist-to-full-hip, and waist-to-knee. These additional measurements help us determine the proportions of the fitted portion of the gown and where the skirt should begin to flare.
Please do not rely on a standard dress size or submit estimated measurements. Follow the measurement guide provided with your order carefully, and have another adult assist you whenever possible.
Your gown is created using the measurements and fit information you provide, but a made-to-measure gown is not the same as having multiple in-person fittings with a local seamstress. This distinction is especially important with mermaid, trumpet, and fit-and-flare silhouettes, which contour the body closely through several measurement points.
Even when measurements are taken accurately, minor local alterations may sometimes be needed to achieve your preferred final fit. Differences in body shape, posture, undergarments, weight fluctuations, and the way a fitted gown settles on the individual body can all affect the final fit.
For this reason, we recommend taking measurements carefully using the silhouette-specific form provided after ordering and allowing time before your wedding for any preferred local finishing alterations. Significant body changes after measurements are submitted may also require additional alterations. Any local alterations needed or desired after delivery are the responsibility of the customer and are not included in the gown price. Bella Luna Gowns does not reimburse alteration costs.
