No. Satin refers to a smooth, lustrous fabric construction, but bridal satins can vary considerably in weight, softness, sheen, stretch and drape. A heavier Duchess satin has more body and can support structured corsetry, pleating and fuller skirts, while a softer, more fluid satin creates a smoother drape and is better suited to fitted, column or softly sculpted silhouettes.

For example, the satin selected for a structured couture ball gown would not necessarily be the same satin we would choose for a softly draped fitted gown such as Margaux. At Bella Luna, we select the weight and type of premium bridal satin according to the silhouette and construction of each design, rather than using one satin for every gown.

Mikado and satin are closely related in appearance, but Mikado is better understood as a distinct structured bridal fabric rather than simply a heavier version of ordinary satin. It typically has a smooth or subtly textured surface with a refined satin-like sheen, but its firmer body and more substantial construction allow it to hold crisp pleats, sculpted corsetry, basque waists, architectural skirts and dramatic trains exceptionally well.

Mikado itself also comes in different variations. Depending on its fiber content, weight, weave and whether stretch is incorporated, one Mikado may feel very crisp and architectural while another may be slightly softer or more flexible. Bella Luna selects the specific Mikado or satin that best supports the intended shape, movement and finish of each gown.

Mikado is often an excellent choice for structured ball gown wedding dresses because its substantial body helps maintain skirt volume, pleats, defined waistlines and dramatic trains. Heavier bridal satins can also create beautiful ball gowns, but they may produce a slightly softer appearance depending on the fabric and construction.

These details may be concentrated on the bodice, scattered across the gown or used selectively to preserve the elegance of the satin while adding texture and sparkle.

Available modifications depend on the construction of the individual gown.

Yes. Bella Luna bridal gowns are made to measure using the measurements submitted with your order rather than relying solely on standard retail sizing. We provide a detailed measurement guide and strongly recommend having your measurements taken by an experienced local tailor or seamstress while wearing fitted clothing and the undergarments you plan to wear with your gown.

Made-to-measure means the gown is created using the measurements you provide, but it is not the same as having multiple in-person fittings during construction. Some brides may still choose minor local alterations after delivery for personal fit preferences, posture, undergarments, heel height or other individual considerations.

Custom bridal production may require up to approximately 16 weeks, depending on the gown, fabric availability, design complexity and requested modifications. We recommend ordering approximately five to six months before your wedding whenever possible to allow additional time for production, shipping and any preferred local finishing alterations.

Yes. Bella Luna Gowns is an online couture atelier serving brides throughout the United States. You may choose an existing satin or Mikado gown, personalize an eligible design, or share your inspiration with our couture team to explore a new custom bridal design. Final photos or videos are generally provided for new custom designs before shipment.

You do not need to know exactly which bridal fabric will work best for your design — you can leave the fabric selection to us. Once we understand the silhouette, structure, drape and overall look you want, the Bella Luna design team will select the fabric or combination of fabrics best suited to achieving that design.

Different fabrics behave very differently. A sculpted ball gown may require the structure of Mikado or a heavier bridal satin, while a fitted or softly draped gown may need a smoother, more fluid fabric. We consider fabric weight, movement, sheen, corsetry, skirt volume, train construction and embellishment so the material supports the intended shape and finish of your gown.

For new custom designs, our goal is not simply to choose a beautiful fabric, but to choose the right bridal-grade fabric for the design you want us to create.
